The Damongo Diocesan Youth Council (DADYC) of the Catholic Diocese of Damongo in the Savannah region has held an Iftar celebrations in Damongo with the Ahmadiyyah Muslim mission in Damongo to mark this years Eid - ul- fitr celebrations.
At a short ceremony at the head mosque of the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Mission on Wednesday 4th May, 2022, the Assistant Diocesan Youth Chaplain of the Catholic Church, Reverend Fr. Francis Xavier Kanzong on behalf of the Diocese and the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) presented some food items to the Ahmadiyah muslim mission to mark this year's iftar celebrations after a thirty (30) days fasting in the Islamic religion under the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI) with funding from the Catholic Relief services to support those in the islamic fraternity who are less previleged and could not get something for the Eid to enable them have a joyful celebrations as well.
Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier Kanzong in a brief address said as people living in a community of diverse people who come from different religious backgrounds serving the same God with different ways and beliefs, they saw the need to begin to collaborate and engage with the various religious groups to leverage on the differences to be able to work together to strengthen the existing cordial relationship and the peaceful co-existence they have enjoyed over the years in discharging their duties as religious people rather than waiting to see conflicts among them as witnessed in parts of the Sahel African regions like Burkina faso and the others.
He explained that, the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI) was started in the year 2019 and aims to decrease and mitigate violence in the sahel regions by identifying and addressing the root causes of the crisis with the end goal of ensuring that, Sahelians experience greater levels of peace, social cohesion and resiliency.
He added that, as faith leaders, the Catholic Church has a leadership role in integrating social cohesion and governance approach into new and ongoing initiatives, expanding humanitarian response, and advocating for policy changes at regional, national and international levels.
The Zonal missionary of the Ahmadiyah muslim mission in Damongo, Maulvi Mustapha Usman on behalf of the mission expressed gratitude to the Diocesan Youth Council and it's partners for the gesture and said, they in the Ahmadiyah muslim fraternity are happy that their brothers in the Catholic Church thought of them in their Eid celebrations.
Maulvi Usman added that, the steps taken by the Damongo Diocesan Youth is a unique one in Ghana and rooted in the Islamic religion and that, the gesture will be put into it's intended purpose.
He prayed that Allah multiplies the gesture in the pocket of the givers and give them the strength to continue to do more for the less previlege in the society adding that, their doors are widely opened for any form of assistance in their quest to strengthen peace in the Sahel region.
Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier Kanzong was accompanied by Rev. Pastor Samuel Mahama Denkeri, a pastor at the Amazing Grace ministry, Youth leader and a Motivational Speaker, Mr. Zacchaeus Z. Tieruzie - Focal person to the diocese on the SPI project and the Vice Youth Chairman of the Damongo Diocesan Youth Council and Ramatu Mantenso Yakubu, a Muslim Youth Leader.
