The Governing Council of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) led by Col. Gorden O. A. Appiah has on Monday, 9th May, 2022, paid a two-day familiarization working visit to the Savannah Region.
According to a member of the council, Mr. William Frimpong Bonsu, the visit of the council to the region is to help the council in making informed decisions related to health care delivery as well finding solutions to the identified challenges on the ground and to identify best practices in the region and propagate them in other regions as well as to inspire staff of the Ghana health service to work harder to achieve the health targets.
As part of the council's two days visit to the Savannah Region, the team first made a call at the Savannah regional health directorate where they interacted with health managers of the directorate and with the staff of the Damongo town clinic to have first hand information and practical experiences of the challenges associated with the day-to-day delivery of health care services at the various health levels in the region.
The mini durbar with the health managers and staff of the Damongo town clinic was chaired by the west Gonja municipal chief executive, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari who assured the council of his continuous support to both the municipal and regional health directorates in their health care delivery services to the people of the region.
The team also paid a courtesy call on the Savannah regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu at his office where the regional minister on behalf of the people of the savannah region expressed gratitude to the team for the visit and said, the savannah region as a young region has a lot of challenges that particularly has to do with some three new hospitals to be build by the government in the central Gonja, Sawla - Tuna - Kalba and Bole Districts and called on the council to give the region the necessary support when their need arises.
He noted some of challenges to be staffing, supplies and vehicles to run the hospitals when completed in other to enhance quality health care delivery in the region.
The regional director for health services, Dr. Chrysantus Kubio on his part thanked the council for the familiarization visit to the region and the interactions held between the council and the health managers at the directorate to identify their lapses to inform them in their decision making as far as health service delivery is concern in the region adding that, it's his hope that the health managers in the directorate and the council will employ new strategies to deal with some of the challenges discovered in due course.
The team then proceeded to the Sawla hospital in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, the Doli CHPS and Bole hospital all in the Bole - Bamboi District where the council members continued discussions with health managers, staff, clients and other key stakeholders in those facilities.
According to the council, this will help them make decisions in context as well as guide it in formulating policies and strategies to help the service deliver effectively on it's mandate
The Ghana Health service council is mandated to have general control over the management of the Ghana health and to ensure, among other things the implementation of the function of the service.
In keeping to it's oversight responsibilities, the council has as part of it's 2022 programme of work scheduled zonal visits to the regions to interact and familiarize themselves with health managers, staff and other key stakeholders as well as to ascertain the working conditions and challenges faced by the staff.
