Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia cuts sod for work to begin on the construction of the first Inland marine port in the northern parts of Ghana

The vice president of the republic of Ghana, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has on Friday, 22nd July,2022 cut sod for work to begin for the construction of the first Inland marine port in the northern parts of Ghana at Debre in the Central Gonja District of the savannah region. 

According to the vice president of the republic, the port when completed will have an accompanying Industrial Park at Debre and a multimodal transport corridor, known as the Trans-Volta Logistics Corridor.

The project is being undertaken by LMI Holdings which will involve the development of a system to transport containers and bulk cargo from the Port of Tema to Burkina Faso and other landlocked countries via the Volta Lake. 

The vice president explained that, an additional port which will be constructed at the termination point of the Tema-Mpakadan railway line will facilitate the embarkation and disembarkation of cargo from Tema and Debre.

He congratulated LMI Holdings for the impressive feature and said,  as a company, LMI will be carrying out the project with a plethora of experience in infrastructure development with over $450 million in assets and a Ghanaian conglomerate which has interests in construction, industrial utilities, property, and logistics.

He noted that, LMI holdings has over the last 20 years developed the Special Economic Zones with over $3.4 billion of foreign direct investment which has contributed to Ghana’s economy significantly. 

The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril on his part, underscored the importance of the multi million Dollar facility to the people of the Savannah Region and the nation at large when completed. 

According to the Minister, the Debre inland port when completed, will ease the pressure on the road since goods will be transported directly from the Tema Harbour through Akosombo to the Debre inland port in the Savannah Region for other neighbouring countries such Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali to cart their goods instead of transporting them directly from Tema Port.

He added that, Perishable goods such as yams, Tomotoe among others, will be transported easily without any further damages. 

The  Vice President was joined by the member of Parliament for Damongo and the Savannah Regional Minister led by Savannah Regional Security Council to cut the sod for the construction of the multi purpose inland port at Debre in the Debre Traditional Area and an Industrial park at Yapei in the Kosawgu Traditional Area.
