The Savannah regional command of the Ghana National fire ( GNFS ) has launched this year's fire safety week celebrations at Damongo, the savannah regional capital on Monday 30th May, 2022 under the theme; " Safer Environment, key to investment".
In a welcome address, the savannah regional fire officer ACFO II Francis Kekawo Attipoe explained that the Ghanaian population has over the years been harmed with the effects of fire and it's related emergencies ranging from lost of lives, homes and properties.
He further explained that this year's safety week celebration seeks to protect human lives and the Ghanaian environment adding that the theme for this year seeks to heighten the awareness of the general public on fire safety and the roles of individuals in fire safety precautions with the aim of turning the narrative of fire tragedies in the region.
The regional fire officer said, the Ghana National Fire Service in it's National statistics for the year 2021 on fire outbreaks has declined which indicates a marginal decrease in fire occurances and disclosed that the savannah regional command however saw an increase in the number of fire outbreaks as compared to same period last year explaining that, lost of lives and the estimated cost of damage to properties during the year under review is colossal.
He urged the general public to be mindful of their roles as individuals in keeping their environment safe and assured of his outfits readiness to recommit it's self as far as fire safety is concern.
The guest of honor, Trodompewura Chief Abdallah Ahmed in a key note address explained that, fire could be a good servant and at the same time a bad master and called on the public to take key interest in fire safety precautions and appreciate the work of fire officers in the region.
He said, the collaboration between the security services over the years has been very trumendious and called on all stakeholders in the region to get involved in assisting the Ghana National fire service and all the security services to get the necessary apparatus and equipments that the need to facilitate their work in the region.
He thanked the Ghana National Fire service for organizing such a program but recommended that such programs should be organized in the dry season.
The week long celebration which was launched on Monday, 30th May, 2022 is coupled with other activities such as float on Tuesday, education on fire safety at the three Senior high schools in Damongo on Wednesday, exhibition of fire fighting rescue equipments and will be climax on Friday, 3rd June, 2022 with a stimulation exercise on how to fight fire at the GES office and at the main lorry station of Damongo.
The event was attended by D. O I Iris Juliet Crabbe, DCOP Peter Baba of the regional police command, Akwesi Abora Michael of the immigration service, Lt. col. Aaron Richard Osei of the 155 Armoured regiment, Hajia AC Labujata Hamidu from the Customs service, Mr. Yakubu Amankwa from the Mole National park and some heads of departments in the region.
